Microsoft Ads Attacking Apple?

I made an animated gif file that more accurately portrays the latest microsoft anti-apple ad:

I don’t understand why Microsoft is making these advertisements.  Do they feel threatened by Apple?  They honestly feel that Apple is stealing significant marketshare away from them?  But if you’re going to start an advertising arms race, at least do it right.  The only thing this ad managed to say is that Apples are “sexy” even though they are expensive.  We all know the argument by now: Why buy a Lexus when a Ford Pinto is cheaper?

Some people are hailing these ads as if Apple will respond by lowering their prices, but we should all know by now the most we’ll get is another tacky Mac vs. PC ad.  Apple is selling computers.  If they were too expensive, they wouldn’t sell.  So as long as they are selling, Apple won’t change anything.  See ya next time, folks!

I’ve thought Microsoft was subtly attacking apple for a while based on cost… the real irony is that to buy the usable versions of Windows you can sometimes add 50% cost on top of what you’re paying for.

Overall I think Microsoft does feel threatened by Apple. They have had some pretty feeble attempts at ads recently, Don’t forget about the Seinfeld/Gates commercials which made everyone go “WTF?”

The ads are completely valid.  Windows laptops are better equipped hardware wise for the price compared to their Mac counterparts.  We are in a recession.  Prices matter.  I don’t see the problem here.

Windows laptops may have a better variety of hardware options, but saying they are better equipped is very subjective.  They talk about screen size a lot, but fail to mention resolution, backlighting, and panel types because if they compared a PC with actual comparable specs, the prices would be too close.  Plus you get a lot more than just the hardware, you get OS X, which is worth the extra cost to many people.  The whole PC vs. Mac argument is literally comparing lemons to apples.

Even in a recession, cheap crap is still crap.  Look at the resale value.  I sold my 7 year old 12” powerbook for $600!  That’s 45% of its original cost.  How much will your 7 year old laptop go for?

PCs seem cheaper only because apple doesn’t sell cheap computers.
